What is the National Cancer Plan?
The Biden Administration reaffirmed its commitment to the Cancer Moonshot initiative launched in 2016, with a call for a national, whole-of-government effort to end cancer as we know it today. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an HCL Center of Excellence, answered this call.
In April 2023 the NIH presented the National Cancer Plan, a comprehensive guide for advancing the National Cancer Program with the vision and charge of the Cancer Moonshot. The NIH believes that the National Cancer Plan will pave the way for significant progress in cancer research and treatment, and they are committed to working towards a future without cancer.
This plan provides a framework for collaboration among various stakeholders, including the federal government and society at large. It outlines eight goals that must be achieved to prevent cancer, reduce deaths from cancer, and ensure the best possible quality of life for people living with cancer. Along with each goal, a set of strategies is associated, describing essential research and other activities needed to maximize benefits for everyone. The National Cancer Plan issues a call to action that urges everyone, every organization, and individual, to do their part in helping to end cancer as we know it.
The renewed Cancer Moonshot initiative aims to reduce the cancer death rate by half within 25 years and improve the lives of people with cancer and cancer survivors. Cancer Moonshot has already made significant accomplishments, including expanding Early Detection, promoting cancer genome sequencing programs for rare cancers through direct participant engagement, and creating the Drug Resistance and Sensitivity Network (DRSN). The Cancer Moonshot program is a crucial step in the fight against cancer and has already made significant strides toward reducing the global impact of the disease.
